I spotted it parked next to mine. The owner was in the process of taking a picture of them together when I unlocked the doors. We had a nice chat.

Only because of the hatch.

Apologies for the hijack. I’ve never really been a Subaru guy per se (currently own an S4 and an M3) but I’m seriously considering a WRX (maybe STI) as my next daily driver to replace the S4. Manual transmission and a hatch are a must. Given those requirements, which years would you look at and why? And do you think it’s worth spending for an STI to DD, if I’ll still be keeping the M3 as well?

damn well... that’s quite a question. I had a 14 but I have not driven an S4, M3, STi or 15+ WRX.

14 was the last year of the hatches. They changed something with the motor around 2010 or 11 and it have more POWA. It also got a slight face lift and became its own model instead of being an Impreza trim line.

for m/y 15 I think they changed the header design so it doesn;t sound like it used to. I’ve also hear on the internets that its not as ‘raw’ as early models, more tamed driving.

With a WRX/STi it will probably be more like your S4 but with rattling plastic. I bet its lighter so it might more nimble. Its not going to swing loose like a RWD sports car. If you have the means you’ll want the STi.

I always wanted a 6th gear, its a better dif and its controllable. The WRX dif is good but the STi is amazing. and +50hp so yea, STi. The AWD sticks every time and with snow tires its like theres nothing there. Its almost annoying how much traction that thing got.

What makes you want to get rid of the S4?

The S4 has been a great daily for me for a long time, it’s just an ‘01 with 155k on the clock and it’s getting to the point where it’s too much of a pain in the ass maintenance wise. I’m good with a wrench and do almost everything myself, but I just want something I won’t have to put so much work into. I also live in Seattle and ski/hike/mountain bike a ton, which means I spend a decent amount of time on forest service roads and the like. I definitely don’t need/want any real off road capability, but a little more ground clearance would be cool.

It’s also not thaaaat much fun to drive. It’s fast in a straight line (with a bunch of mods it should be putting out about 340hp/400lb-ft at the crank) but nose heavy and a little numb feeling, especially compared to the M3, which is all kinds of poised and awesome.

MY 03 Allroad with 187k miles knows nothing of this crap you speak of.... shit whats that leaking....

the WRX isn;t very high, probably no more than an S4. I suppose you could lift it. i think the WRX are a bit nose heavy as well with the engine positioning and AWD needing space. It does have a good low center of gravity though

Ha, yeah...

I know the WRX isn’t much higher than my S4, but that’s definitely not the main thing I’m after. Really I just want something newer and lower maintenance, and a little extra ground clearance while I’m at it wouldn’t hurt, you know?

I’m also looking at stuff like a B8 allroad or an XC70. They’d be less fun to drive (and are auto only in the States) but nail all the practical stuff. Since I’ll still have the M3 as a fun car, maybe that’s okay.
